Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish jáquima.
Etymology: < Spanish jáquima type of halter or bridle (early 16th cent.; 14th cent. as †xáquima) < Arabic šakīma type of bit.The initial h in English reflects the regular (post-medieval) Spanish pronunciation of j as /x/.
U.S.
A type of halter or bridle which does not have a bit, but works by applying pressure via a noseband to the animal's nose and lower jaw. Also: a headstall (headstall n.1 1).
