Origin: A borrowing from Arawak. Etymon: Arawak haküya.
Etymology: < Arawak haküya, denoting hardwood trees of the genus Handroanthus, typically used for making tool handles.In forms ending in -ia perhaps with remodelling after -ia suffix1, by association with plant names of scientific Latin origin.
In or with reference to Guyana: any of several kinds of dense, heavy wood; spec. that of the forest tree Ixora ferrea (family Rubiaceae) or of trees of the genus Handroanthus (family Bignoniaceae); esp. (in later use) in hackia stick. Also: a tree from which such wood is obtained.
