Brit. /ˈhaklbak/, U.S. /ˈhækəlˌbæk/

Etymology: < hackle n.2 + back n.1 In sense 1 apparently so called with reference to the roughness of the ridged shell resembling a hackle. Compare earlier heckleback n. and hackle n.2 3, both denoting a different fish.Compare also the following isolated earlier example, used as an insult to a person, although this is probably to be interpreted as a variant of either heckleback n.
