Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: an element of unknown origin, taper n.1
Etymology: < a first element of unknown origin + taper n.1 The first element in the α. forms is unclear. The β. forms apparently show folk-etymological alteration after hedge n., and the γ. forms after hag n.1, but it is possible that either of these could instead reflect the original form. Compare also high-taper n.With the second element of the name compare taperwort n. at taper n.1 Compounds 2, and, with similar semantic motivation, torch n. 2b, torchwort n., candlewick mullein n. at candle-wick n. 1b, and names in other Germanic languages, as e.g. Middle Dutch tortsecruyt (Dutch toortskruid), German Kerzenkraut.
Great mullein, Verbascum thapsus. In later use also: a torch or taper made from the dried stalk of this plant. Cf. high-taper n.
