Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew haggāḏāh.
Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew haggāḏāh story, tale (Mishna), (more fully haggāḏāh šel pesaḥ , literally ‘Passover story’) the narrative of the Exodus which is read at the Passover Seder, also the book which contains this narrative and the Seder ritual, verbal noun < higgīḏ to narrate, to declare, to expound. Compare slightly later Aggadah n.Compare post-classical Latin Haggadah (1510 or earlier; also Hagadah , Haggada ). With the specific use of haggāḏāh (compare sense 2) compare Exodus 13:8: ‘And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the Lord did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt’. In plural forms in -ot, -oth after the Hebrew plural form haggāḏōṯ.
