Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French agace.
Etymology: < Middle French, French agace, agasse, agache (11th cent. in Old French as agace ; also in Anglo-Norman as agace , agas ) < Old High German agazza magpie, an alteration (probably originally hypocoristic) of *agastra or agalstra (see haggister n.).On the initial h- see discussion at haggister n. Compare post-classical Latin agazia (1483 in a continental source). Earlier currency may perhaps be implied by the field name Haggas Croft (1442; Ecclesfield, West Riding of Yorkshire); compare note at haggister n.
Obsolete.
