Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin hagiographa.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin hagiographa third of the three canonical divisions of the Hebrew Scriptures (4th or 5th cent. in Jerome), (more broadly) Scripture (7th cent. or earlier) < Byzantine Greek ἅγιόγραϕα , use as noun of neuter plural of ἅγιόγραϕος written by inspiration, scriptural < Hellenistic Greek ἁγιο- hagio- comb. form + ancient Greek -γραϕος -graph comb. form.Compare Anglo-Norman agiograffes (plural) third of the three canonical divisions of the Hebrew Scriptures (13th cent.), Middle French, French hagiographes (plural) sacred writings, Scripture (end of the 15th cent. as agyographes), third of the three canonical divisions of the Hebrew Scriptures (c1500 as agiographes).
The third of the three canonical divisions of the Hebrew Scriptures; the books contained in this division (see note); = Kethubim n. Formerly also more generally: sacred writings; scripture. Cf. hagiography n. 2. The two other divisions of the Hebrew Scriptures are the Law (see law n.1 10c) and the Prophets (see prophet n. 2a). The Hagiographa contains the Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Canticles, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, Ezra–Nehemiah, and Chronicles.
