Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese hamachi.
Etymology: < Japanese hamachi (1603 as famachi in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam).
The young of the Japanese amberjack or yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata, a subtropical carangid fish of the northwest Pacific that is fished and bred in Japan as a food fish; this fish as an article of food.
