Etymology: modern Latin (J. F. Gronovius in Linnæus Genera Plantarum (ed. 2, 1742), < Greek ἁμαμηλίς medlar.
A shrub or small tree of the genus so called, which is native to North America and Eastern Asia, belongs to the family Hamamelidaceæ, and includes several species bearing yellow flowers late in winter before the leaves appear; a witch-hazel. Also: the extract made from the leaves and bark of Hamamelis virginiana.
