Etymology: < Arabic ḤMS (read as ḥamās) < ḥ- (in ḥaraka movement) + m- (in muqāwama resistance, opposition) + -s- (in Islām Islam n.) in the official name of the organization, Ḥarakat al-Muqāwama al-Islāmiyya Islamic Resistance Movement, punningly after ḥamās valour, gallantry, zealotry (popularly connoting rigorous resistance and military activism); compare ḥamāsa zeal, enthusiasm, martial valour.The m may have come to be regarded by some Arabic speakers as standing for Arabic musallaḥa armed in al-Ḥaraka al-Musallaḥa al-Islāmiyya The Islamic Armed Movement.
