Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew hălāḵāh.
Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew hălāḵāh the body of Jewish law as contained in the Mishnah, Talmud, and later Jewish literature (frequently from Mishnaic and Talmudic times), also a specific legal ruling, lit. ‘act of going’, i.e. ‘going by rules, procedure, custom, tradition’ < Hebrew hālaḵ to go, to walk.In plural forms in -ot or -oth , e.g. Halachot , after the Hebrew plural form hălāḵōṯ. In β. forms after Yiddish halokhe, which reflects an Ashkenazic pronunciation of the Hebrew noun.

The body of Jewish law contained in the Mishnah (Mishnah n.) and in later Jewish legal codes; the legal element of the Oral Law, as distinct from Haggadah (Haggadah n. 1). Also: a legal ruling included as part of this law.
