Compare Occitan alebardié, Spanish alabardero (1521), Italian alabardiere (a1520), and also Middle Dutch hellebaerdier (late 16th cent.; Dutch hellebaardier), Middle High German helmbarter.With the β. forms in -eer compare also formations in -eer suffix1.
