Etymology: < classical Latin alcēdonia (neuter plural) halcyon days, when the sea was calm ( < alcēdō halcyon (see note) + -ia -ia suffix², after alcyonius (see halcyonian adj.)) + -an suffix. Compare earlier halcyon adj.Classical Latin alcēdō (for which oblique cases are not attested) may derive from ancient Greek ἀλκυών halcyon n., with remodelling of the ending after e.g. terēdō Teredo n.; compare also Hellenistic Greek ἀλκυδών halcydon n.; alternatively the Latin word may derive from a word in a Mediterranean language, from which the Greek word was borrowed.
