Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably modelled on an Afrikaans lexical item. Etymons: hand n., up adv.1, -er suffix1.
Etymology: < hand n. + up adv.1 + -er suffix1, probably after Afrikaans hendsopper, (now usually) hensopper (see hands-upper n.). Compare hands-upper n., hands-up adj., hand-up n. 2, and later hensopper n. Compare also earlier hands up int. 2.
Originally and chiefly South African.
