Compare also Older Scots (rare) handiewrit a person's handwriting or signature (apparently an alteration of hand-writ n. after e.g. handiwork n.; continuity with Old English handgewrit is unlikely):1577 J. Old English handgewrit ( < hand n. + i-writ n.; compare y- prefix) is attested in senses ‘handwritten document (especially one having legal force), contract, deed, bond, signature, autograph’; compare:OE Ælfric Catholic Homilies: 1st Ser.
