Origin: A borrowing from Turkish. Partly also a borrowing from Serbian and Croatian. Etymons: Ottoman Turkish ẖancar, ẖancer; Serbian and Croatian handžar.
Etymology: < Ottoman Turkish ẖancar, khanjar, (from 17th cent.) ẖancer (Turkish hancer , hançer ) < Persian ḵanjar dagger (see khanjar n., and compare the Arabic word cited at that entry). In later use partly via Serbian and Croatian handžar (1631 or earlier, also †andžar) dagger, scimitar. Compare French handjar (a1674; now rare), †hangiar (1727). Compare kinjal n.In form handschar after German Handschar (1809 or earlier). In forms handzar, handžar, handzhar after Serbian and Croatian handžar.
Now chiefly historical.
