Origin: A borrowing from Hawaiian. Etymon: Hawaiian hapa haole.
Etymology: < Hawaiian hapa haole, noun, also used attributively < hapa half ( < English half adj.) + haole white, white person (see haole n.). With use with reference to music (sense B. 2) compare Hawaiian hula hapa haole Americanized hula, mele hapa haole Hawaiian-style song with (mainly) English words. Compare earlier haole n. Compare also later hapa n. and hapa adj.
