Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Hapalotis.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Hapalotis, former genus name ( H. Lichtenstein Darstellung neuer oder wenig bekannter Säugethiere vi. (1829) plate 29; preoccupied by a moth genus) < ancient Greek ἁπαλός soft (of unknown origin) + οὐτ- , οὖς ear (see oto- comb. form).In some early instances it is difficult to distinguish the plural of this word from Hapalotes, plural of scientific Latin Hapalotis (see above).

Now historical and rare.

Any of various long-eared, long-tailed Australian rodents of the former genus Hapalotis (family Muridae), now placed in the genera Notomys (hopping mice) and Conilurus (rabbit rats).Half of the dozen or so recorded species became extinct during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
