An astringent medicinal preparation made from the twigs, leaves, and bark of witch hazel, Hamamelis virginica, and used in the treatment of haemorrhoids, minor bleeding, and skin irritation. Frequently attributive in the names of products, as hazeline snow, hazeline cream, etc. Now rare.Cf. hamamelis n.The astringent properties of hazeline are due to the tannins it contains, especially hamamelitannin.
