Either of two extinct hominids of the genus Ardipithecus, known from late Miocene and early Pliocene fossil remains found in the Afar region of Ethiopia, and dated to about 4.4 and 5.6 million years ago respectively. Also: the genus itself.Originally placed in the genus Australopithecus, Ardipithecus is regarded by many as the earliest bipedal hominin (cf. Orrorin n.).
