单词 haswed
释义

haswedadj.

Forms: early Middle English haswed.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation Etymons: Old English *hasu , -ed suffix2.
Etymology: Apparently the reflex of an unattested Old English derivative adjective < *hasu (inflected form *hasw-) grey, dusky, ashen (see below) + -ed suffix2. Old English *hasu would be cognate with Old Icelandic hǫss grey and probably also with Middle High German heswe pale, dull (in an isolated attestation) < the same Germanic base as (with different extension) Old High German hasan , in uncertain sense, probably ‘polished, well-made’, which is itself cognate with classical Latin cānus grey, hoary (see canous adj.). Its existence is probably shown also by the derivative Old English haswig grey, iron-coloured, (also) rust-coloured ( < *hasu + -ig -y suffix1).
Obsolete.
Dusky, grey, tawny. In quot. a1325 in use with reference to sheep or goats and contrasted with animals of uniform colour, so perhaps implying a spotted coat or markings.
