Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hard adj., arse n.
Etymology: < hard adj. + arse n. With the use as adjective compare earlier hard-arsed adj., and also hard-ass adj., hard-assed adj. With the use as noun compare hard-ass n.In South African use probably after Afrikaans hardegat (1962 or earlier; < harde- , combining form of hard hard adj. + gat hole, (vulgar) anus: see witgat n.). Compare the following isolated earlier use of hard-arse as a name applied to a horse:1761 J. Mordant Compl. Steward I. 209 He was made coachman..and gave the wheel-horses the pretty names of Gooseberry and Hard-arse.
