head sin
(b) spec. Designating the cardinal virtues or the capital sins (see cardinal adj. 1, capital sin n. 1). Chiefly in head sin, head virtue. Cf. headly adj. Obsolete. [In head sin probably ultimately after post-classical Latin capitale peccatum or vitium capitale (see capital sin n.); compare Old Frisian hāvedsende , Middle Dutch hōvetsonde (Dutch hoofdzonde ), Middle Low German hȫvetsünde , Old High German houbitsunta (Middle High German houbetsünde , early modern German hauptsünde ), Old Icelandic hǫfuðsynd , Old Swedish hovuþsynd (Swedish huvudsynd ), Old Danish houæt synd (Danish hovedsynd ), all in sense ‘deadly sin’ (in modern use also ‘serious or notable sin’ more generally).
With head virtue compare Middle Dutch hōvetdoget cardinal virtue (Dutch hoofddeugd, now also ‘(a person's) main virtue’), Middle High German houbettugent (a person's) main virtue (German Haupttugend, in early modern German also in sense ‘cardinal virtue’).]
