Etymology: < classical Latin antrum cave, cavern, dell, hollow space, cavity, tomb, in post-classical Latin also cavity in a bone of the head (mid 16th cent.), any of various other hollow cavities in the body (1675 in pylori antrum : see pyloric antrum n. at pyloric adj. and n. Compounds) < ancient Greek ἄντρον cave, in Hellenistic Greek also inner chamber, closet, probably < the same Indo-European base as Armenian ayr cave. With antrum of Highmore at sense 2 compare post-classical Latin antrum Highmorianum (1698 or earlier), French antre d'Highmore (1751).The plural form reflects the Latin plural.
1. A cave or cavern; esp. (chiefly with reference to Virgil's Aeneid) the cavern in which the Cumaean Sibyl delivered oracular pronouncements.Not fully naturalized in English.
