单词 hatel
释义

hateladj.n.

Forms:

α. early Old English hatol (Kentish), Old English heatol (rare), early Middle English heatel (south-west midlands), Middle English hatel.

β. Old English hetul- (inflected form, rare), Old English hetl- (inflected form, rare), Old English–early Middle English hetel, Old English–early Middle English hetol, early Middle English hætel.

Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to early modern Dutch †hatel (second half of the 16th cent.), Old Saxon hatul , Old High German hazzal , Norwegian (Nynorsk) hatal , Old Swedish -hatul (in ofhatul very odious) < the Germanic base of hete n.1 + the Germanic base of -le suffix 1.The stem vowel of the β. forms may reflect i-mutation caused by the original form of the suffix (see discussion at -le suffix 1), but has probably been reinforced by analogy with hete n.1, the α. forms at hately adj., etc.
Obsolete.
A. adj.
(a) Odious, detestable. (b) Full of hatred; malevolent, malicious; hostile. (c) Cruel; fierce; deadly.
