Origin: A borrowing from Turkish. Etymon: Ottoman Turkish ḵaṭṭ-ı hümāyūn.
Etymology: < Ottoman Turkish ḵaṭṭ-ı hümāyūn (Turkish hatt-ı hümâyun ) < Persian ḵaṭi-humāyūn the sovereign's autograph < ḵaṭṭ , ḵaṭ (see hatti sherif n.) + -i , suffix connecting a noun to its qualifier + humāyūn sacred, royal, imperial, (also originally) fortunate, auspicious ( < humā mythical bird associated with good fortune (see huma n.) + a suffix forming adjectives).In quot. 1828 via French †khatti humayoun (1820 as in the passage translated; now hatti humayoun).

Frequently with capital initials. In the Ottoman Empire: a decree or edict issued by the government and approved by the Sultan personally by means of a handwritten note or sign, and thereby considered to be irrevocable. Also (with the): spec. the Hatti Humayun of 1856 which aimed to establish equality between Ottoman subjects regardless of faith or ethnicity. Cf. firman n., hatti sherif n.
