Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hen n.1, foot n.
Etymology: In α. forms < the genitive of hen n.1 + foot n. In β. forms < hen n.1 + foot n. Named with reference to the supposed resemblance of the divided leaves of these plants to a hen's claws.Notes on senses. In sense 1 after classical Latin pes gallinaceus (Pliny); compare Middle French pied de geline (1557 in the passage translated in quot. 1578 at sense 1, itself translating Pliny's Latin). In sense 2 after post-classical Latin pes pulli, frequently from 12th cent. in British sources, denoting various plants. Note on forms. The form hens feet at α. forms reflects the plural of foot n.
1. Any of several herbaceous plants of (or formerly included in) the genera Corydalis and Fumaria (family Papaveraceae); esp. the climbing corydalis, Ceratocapnos claviculata. Obsolete.
