单词 headstall
释义

headstalln.1

Brit. /ˈhɛdstɔːl/, U.S. /ˈhɛdˌstɔl/, /ˈhɛdˌstɑl/
Forms: Middle English hedstalle, Middle English heuedstal, Middle English hedstel, Middle English–1500s hedstall, 1500s headestall, 1500s hedstylles (plural), 1500s heedstall, 1500s–1600s headstal, 1500s– headstall, 1600s headstale.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: head n.1, an element of uncertain origin.
Etymology: < head n.1 + a second element of uncertain origin (probably stall n.1: see note). Compare Middle Low German hȫvetstel. The second element is probably stall n.1, perhaps either with the implication of something placed on top (compare the related stell v. and the Germanic parallels at that entry) or denoting a receptacle (compare later stall n.1 8 and fingerstall n.). Compare (with the second element reflecting a different ablaut grade: see stool n.) Middle Dutch hooftstoel (but compare Dutch hoofstel (1805 or earlier)), Swedish huvudstol , huvudstulle (1653), Danish hovedstol (already in early modern Danish, now regional). In sense 2 after classical Latin capistrum (see capistrate v.). With reference to horses (sense 1), however, compare quot. c1330, which suggests that the headstall was originally only a part of the tackle denoted by Latin capistrum.
1. The part of a bridle or halter that fits over or round the head of a horse or draught animal. In quot. 1464 perhaps: a fastening used to hold a tabor or small drum in position while on horseback.
