Etymology: < head n.¹ + stander n., so called on account of the typical head-down attitude of these fishes, after German Kopfsteher (1955 in the passage translated in quot. 1955; also in more general sense ‘someone or something that stands upside down or does a headstand’, both literally and figuratively (mid 19th cent. or earlier)).

Any of several small freshwater fishes of the South American genera Anostomus (family Anostomidae) and Chilodus (family Chilodontidae), which typically adopt a head-down attitude, and some types of which may be kept in aquaria.These fishes are sometimes all placed in the family Anostomidae.
