Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek Ἑλληνίζειν.
Etymology: < ancient Greek Ἑλληνίζειν to speak Greek, in Hellenistic Greek also to make Greek < Ἕλλην Hellene n. + -ίζειν -ize suffix. In sense 1b after Hellenism n. 4b. Compare earlier Hellenism n. and also Hellenist n.

a. intransitive. To adopt (elements of) the Greek culture or lifestyle, esp. to use the Greek language. Also: to cause or force someone to adopt the Greek culture or lifestyle.Used especially of the Jewish peoples after the Diaspora: cf. Hellenist n. 2.
