Etymology: Origin unknown. The first element probably shows hell n.: compare kill-devil in quot. 1866 (see kill-devil n. 3) and later hell-devil n. 2.
U.S.
The large, predatory aquatic larva of a dobsonfly (family Corydalidae), esp. that of Corydalis cornutus, which is popular as fishing bait. Also (more fully hellgrammite fly): the winged adult dobsonfly. Also in extended use.
