Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hen n.1, night n.
Etymology: In α. forms < hen n.1 + night n. In β. forms < the genitive of hen n.1 + night n. Compare earlier hen party n.β. forms are chiefly found in Australian and New Zealand English, where the usual form of the word is hen's night; this probably reflects association with buck's night at buck n.1 Additions, which is frequently used in these varieties for the equivalent all-male events. Compare similarly β. forms at hen party n.
1. An evening function intended only for women, typically taking place in a social club or nightclub, and often involving bawdy entertainment; (also) an evening on which a group of women socialize together in this way. Cf. ladies' night n. at lady n. Compounds 3b.Not in North American use.
