Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: heart n., ache n.1
Etymology: < heart n. + ache n.1 With use in the sense ‘heartburn’ compare heartburn n. and models noted at that entry, and compare also heart n. 4.The Older Scots form hartaxes shows double plural marking.
1. Pain in the chest, esp. when in the region of the heart or attributed to it; spec. = heartburn n. 2. Also: an instance of this (rare). Obsolete.
