Etymology: Origin uncertain. Originally (in sense 1) perhaps a variant of hep adj., arising from misanalysis of word division in the expression hep to (compare quot. 1903 at hep adj. 1). In to be hepped on at sense 2b perhaps a variant or alteration (perhaps by association with hep adj.) of to be hipped on at hipped adj.³, attested earlier in the same sense. With sense 2a perhaps compare also hyped at hype v. (compare hyped up at that entry) or hopped adj. (compare hopped-up at hopped adj. 2b), both attested earlier in this sense; compare hep v. (later in this sense).
