Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin hegemonia; Greek ἡγεμονία.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin hegemonia (1513 or earlier), or its etymon (ii) ancient Greek ἡγεμονία authority, rule, political supremacy < ἡγεμών leader (see hegemon n.) + -ία -y suffix3. Compare German Hegemonie (1765), French hégémonie (1840; 1815 as †egimonie), Italian egemonia (1799).In quot. 1973 at sense 1a translating Chinese bàquán zhǔyì, literally ‘hegemony doctrine’.
