Etymology: < Himālaya (Sanskrit < hima snow + ālaya dwelling, abode) + -an suffix. The second pronunciation, though etymologically correct, is now infrequent.
1. Of or pertaining to the Himalayas, a system of mountains forming the northern boundary of India, and containing the highest summits in the world. Hence, in names of species of plants and animals native to this region. Himalayan black bear n. Selenarctos thibetanus. Himalayan oak n. Himalayan pine n. , the Neoza pine, Pinus gerardiana, a pine of the north-west Himalayas, each cone of which yields about 100 edible seeds or nuts; called also the Nepal nut-pine. Himalayan partridge n. a snow partridge. Himalayan primrose n. Primula sikkimensis. Himalayan rhubarb n. Rheum nobile, and other species.
