Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Holyrood.

Etymology: < the name of the Palace of Holyrood (more fully Holyroodhouse), the official Edinburgh residence of the British monarch, and the district surrounding it, in which the Scottish parliament is now situated following devolution in 1998.A palace was constructed at the site in the late 15th cent. (although Scottish kings had earlier used buildings next to the abbey as a residence). It takes its name from Holyrood Abbey (founded 1128; also known as Holyrood House), the ruins of which are situated in the grounds of the palace. The name of the abbey is recorded variously, as Holy rude (1537), Halyrodehowse (1520), Hali Croise (1435), and (in Latin) Ecclesia Sanctae Crucis (c1145); compare holy rood n.¹
