Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Omaloptera; Latin Homaloptera.

Etymology: In sense 1 < scientific Latin Omaloptera (see quot. 1817 at sense 1; amended to Homaloptera ( W. S. Macleay Horæ Entomologicæ (1821) I. ii. vi. 367). In sense 2 < scientific Latin Homaloptera (J. C. Van Hasselt 1823, in Algemeene konst en letter-bode 35 133). Although the two scientific Latin taxa were probably coined independently of each other, they are both < ancient Greek ὁμαλός (see homalographic adj.) + πτερόν wing (see ptero- comb. form) + scientific Latin -a -a suffix².

Zoology.

1. A former division of dipteran insects which included the family Hippoboscidae of parasitic flies. Now disused.
