单词 homarine
释义

homarineadj.n.

Brit. /ˈhɒmərʌɪn/, U.S. /ˈhɑməˌraɪn/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Homarus , -ine suffix1.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Homarus, genus name ( F. Weber Nomenclator Entomologicus (1795) 94) + -ine suffix1.The scientific Latin genus name is < French homard lobster (1525 in Middle French as †hommar ), probably < German Hummer (16th cent., originally regional (Low German)), probably < a form in a Scandinavian language (compare Old Icelandic, Icelandic humarr , Old Danish, Danish hummer , Swedish hummer (1609 as †humer )); further etymology unknown. The Scandinavian words have often been taken as cognate with ancient Greek κάμμαρος , kind of crustacean (see gammarid n.). However, this poses phonological problems. Alternatively, it has sometimes been suggested that the Greek word may be a very early loan < Germanic, but this is unlikely in view of its early attestation (5th cent. b.c.).
