Etymology: < high adj. + relief n.3, probably after French haut relief (1669: see haut-relief n.). Compare also Italian alto rilievo alto-relievo n. Compare earlier alto-relievo n. Compare also earlier low relief n.
1. A method of moulding, carving, or stamping in which the sculptured shapes project from the plane surface to at least half their actual depth in the round. Frequently in in high relief. Cf. low relief n. 1, relief n.3 1a.Also called alto relievo, haut relief.
