单词 hindustan
释义

Hindustann.adj.

Brit. /ˌhɪndʊˈstɑːn/, /ˌhɪndʊˈstan/, U.S. /ˌhɪnduˈstæn/, /ˌhɪnduˈstɑn/
Forms: 1600s Hindorstand, 1600s Hindusthan, 1600s Indosthan, 1600s Industhan, 1600s–1700s Industan, 1600s–1800s Indostan, 1700s–1800s Hindostan, 1700s– Hindustan.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Hindustan.
Etymology: < Hindustan (Hindi hindustān , Urdu hindustān ), a name for South Asia, often used to denote specific parts of the north of South Asia (see note) < Persian hindūstān < hindū Indian person (see Hindu n.) + -stān place, country (compare -stan comb. form). The place name is attested in English from the late 16th cent. onwards, initially chiefly with reference to the Mughal Empire (for later uses compare the note at sense A. 2). Early forms of the name include Indostan (1594), Industan (1613), Industhan (1625), and Hindostan (1673). Forms with -th- reflect Hindi hindusthān , an alteration of the Urdu name with remodelling of the second element after the related Sanskrit sthāna locality (compare the name of Rajasthan : see Rajasthani n.). Forms with initial I- (both of the name and of the noun and adjective) apparently show influence from the name of India (see India n., and compare especially the Greek and Latin forms cited there).
historical in later use.
