Etymology: < French hétéromère (1817 in Cuvier, designating beetles with tarsi composed of different numbers of segments on different legs, < hétéro- hetero- comb. form + -mère -merous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare ancient or Hellenistic Greek ἑτερομερής leaning to one side, one-sided (in a philosophical fragment).
Having or consisting of parts differing in character, number, or other respect.
1. Entomology. Having legs differing in the number of their tarsal joints; spec. belonging to the division Heteromera of coleopterous insects (see heteromeran n.).
