Etymology: Variant of honey n., distinguished in form and pronunciation in this sense.
Scottish and English regional (northern, esp. north-eastern).
As a term of endearment or affectionate form of address: sweetheart, darling.Hinny is typically used to refer to a woman or child, but in northern England it can be used by members of either sex to address a man, although such usage is now rare.Quot. 1686 shows earlier use of the same form in the compound hinny-leuve ‘honey-love’.singing hinny: see singing adj.
