Etymology: < hip n.1 + joint n.1
The joint at which the thigh bone (femur) articulates with the pelvis. In later use also: an artificial replacement for this.The hip joint is a ball-and-socket joint, with the head of the femur fitting into a cavity (acetabulum) in the hip bone, and is capable of a wide range of movement.
