Etymology: < German regional (chiefly Austria) Heurige (masculine noun) wine from the latest harvest (apparently 1834 or earlier (see quot. 1834); a1836 in a poem by the Austrian writer Ferdinand Raimund), an establishment where such wine is served (1855 or earlier), use as noun of heurig recent, dating from the current year (Old High German hiurig, Middle High German hiurec: see below).Ulterior etymology. Old High German hiurig is < hiuro , hiure of or relating to the current year (Middle High German hiure , German (now chiefly regional: Bavaria, Austria) heuer ), shortened (with elision of a medial syllable) < an unattested Old High German phrase *hiu jāru in this year ( < a Germanic base forming demonstratives (see he pron.) + jāru , dative singular of jār year n.) + -ig -y suffix1. Specific forms. In singular forms Heurige and Heuriger after the nominative singular definite and indefinite forms of the German noun respectively. In singular form Heurigen after the inflected form of the German noun in all oblique singular cases. In plural forms Heurigen and Heurige after the German weak plural form (used e.g. if preceded by the German definite article) and strong plural form (used e.g. if preceded by a numeral) respectively.
