Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin Hippocrēnē; Greek Ἱπποκρήνη.
Etymology: < classical Latin Hippocrēnē or its etymon Hellenistic Greek Ἱπποκρήνη, a spring on Mount Helicon, lit. ‘fountain of the horse’ < ἱππο hippo- comb. form + κρήνη fountain (see crenic adj.), so called because it was fabled to have been produced by a stroke of Pegasus' hoof.Compare Middle French Hippocrene, Hypocrene (late 16th cent.; French Hippocrène).
