Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ἀστραπή , -phobia comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀστραπή lightning (see astrapothere n.) + -phobia comb. form.
A fear of lightning, or (more widely) of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. Cf. brontophobia n. at bronto- comb. form .

Some individuals, especially those of peculiarly impressible organizations, are not only unpleasantly but seriously affected during thunder-storms that are attended by vivid flashes of lightning.
1953 W. S. Sadler Pract. of Psychiatry 275 Fear of storms—Astraphobia.—Others are afraid of storms; thunder and lightning strike terror to their souls.
