Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the second syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. historico-linguistic Brit. /hɪˌstɒrᵻkə(ʊ)lɪŋˈɡwɪstɪk/, U.S. /hɪˌstɔrəkoʊˌlɪŋˈɡwɪstɪk/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin historico-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin historico- (1595 or earlier in work titles), combining form of classical Latin historicus historic adj.; compare -o- connective.Post-classical Latin historico- is attested in compounds of two or more elements, e.g. historico-poeticus (1595 or earlier), historico-politico-juridicus (1620 or earlier). A number of the English examples have parallels in Latin, e.g. historico-physicus (1609 or earlier; compare quot. 1746 at sense 1), historico-politicus (1610 or earlier; compare quot. 1900 at sense 1).
