单词 hijabi
释义

hijabin.adj.

Brit. /hᵻˈdʒɑːbi/, /hᵻˈdʒabi/, U.S. /hɪˈdʒɑbi/, /hɪˈdʒæbi/
Origin: Of multiple origins. Apparently partly a borrowing from Urdu. Apparently partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu ḥijābī; Persian ḥijābī.
Etymology: Apparently < (i) Urdu ḥijābī (adjective) veiled, modest, (noun) woman who wears a head covering or veil, and its etymon (ii) Persian ḥijābī (adjective and noun), in the same senses < ḥijāb hijab n. + , suffix forming adjectives. In Arabic an adjective *ḥijabī does not appear to be attested. The usual Arabic word for a Muslim woman who wears a head coverinɡ or veil in public is muḥajjaba (use as a noun of the feminine past participle of ḥajjaba to veil < the same base as ḥijāb hijab n.). Compare the following example of an isolated earlier borrowing < the Urdu adjective, with a related sense ‘restricted, screened off’ (used as a noun with reference to a space):1952 Proc. Pakistan Hist. Conf. Suppl. 9 The principal mosque..contains..maqsurahs or hijabis (screened compartments reserved for the use of rulers and their retinues of ladies) at one or both the north and south ends of the prayer chamber.
