Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin aphaereticus; Greek ἀϕαιρετικός.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin aphaereticus (1664 or earlier in medical context, 1670 or earlier in linguistic sense) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek ἀϕαιρετικός fit for taking away (in both linguistic and medical uses) < ancient Greek ἀϕαιρετός to be taken away, separable ( < ἀϕαιρεῖν to take away, remove (see aphaeresis n.) + -τός , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare French aphérétique (1839 or earlier), German aphäretisch (1828, or earlier). Compare earlier aphaeresis n.
